Yes. Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, employers must provide training wherever there is a risk of injury from manual handling tasks. In practice, this makes manual handling training mandatory in almost every UK workplace — from warehouses and care homes to offices and retail.
It's any task that involves lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, lowering or supporting a load by hand or bodily force. That covers everything from shifting boxes and moving stock to assisting a patient or carrying tools across a site.
Manual handling is responsible for a huge share of non-fatal workplace injuries every year. The most common are back injuries, musculoskeletal disorders, and lower limb disorders — usually caused by poor lifting techniques, twisting under load, or attempting loads that are too heavy for one person.
The course teaches a simple set of golden rules every learner can apply immediately: plan the lift, get close to the load, use the power zone, bend your knees not your back, don't twist under load, and ask for help when something's awkward or heavy.
The power zone is the area between mid-thigh and shoulder height where the body can lift most safely. Lifting from floor level or above head height puts far more strain on the spine, so safe manual handling techniques aim to keep loads inside the power zone wherever possible.
It's a simple process for identifying the risk of injury before a task is carried out. The course covers the standard TILE method — Task, Individual, Load, Environment — so learners can spot hazards and decide whether to lift, use an aid, or call for a second person.
Approximately 90 minutes. You can complete it in one sitting or break it up and study at your own pace.
